Third year's the charm, especially when you can't get it together to draw something new. This is just a little tribute to an old Batman cover, illustrated by the great Jerry Robinson (can't find the original image in my files, but it dates to his early 1940s involvement in the comic book). I try to draw a little tighter these days, but there you have it. I might expand on this post tomorrow, when I'm less tired...no wonder, it's 10:30 (bedtime!). 'Night!

What I'm Reading/Dreaming

It's mid-August, and I'm having one of those weeks that's a bit out of focus. Come down with a mysterious ailment on Sunday (either a cold, swine flu, or a intense allergic reaction to something), and spent most of Monday either sleeping my way through it or shuffling between bed and the living-room couch, seeking distraction. I've kicked whatever it was, but am still feeling out-of-tune (on Wednesday night!). So, no new drawings, no new scans, nothing of my own to share. My drawing table is gathering dust and cat hair. So, it's time to reach into the "reading" pile, post a couple of scans, and call it even.

Lately, I've been falling asleep to Winsor McCay's Dreams of the Rarebit Fiend, a collection of McCay's weekly newspaper strip that ran between 1904 and 1913. I found a beat-up copy of a Dover collection (still in print), which was $4.95 well spent. Like many Dover art books, it offers crisp black-and-white reproduction and no frills.

Like his later Little Nemo in Slumberland, it was comprised of beautifully balanced single-page strips detailing some a character caught in an improbable situation, rapidly spinning out of control...who, in the end, wakes up to find him/herself sitting awake in bed (and vowing "no more o' them Welsh rarebits before I go to bed, no sir! Oh!"). Antlers, trolley accidents, gigantic domestic animals, thrills, spills, flights through the night sky in four-poster beds. Whimsical, yes, but rendered with sharp wit and perfect artistic instinct. McCay chased his inspiration into a new (dream) world, armed with a classical illustrator's skill-set. I like it.

It's Monday morning, and I'm posting another older drawing that I've recolored, incorporating a few new tricks...you don't think there's anything unethical about this, do you? The original piece is here, and frankly, it hurts for me to gaze upon.

In other news, I've added a gimmick on the right-hand side of the page that posts recent comments (could yours be there?), and while it's a nice feature to have, the formatting looks off. Apostrophes look more like comic-strip swearing for some reason! I'm torn between thinking that it's better to leave it off, or just waiting for Blogger to iron out its various glitches and bugs. Probably the latter.

Update: Sidebar comments are gone. Apparently customized templates (such as the one I'm using here) are known to have probs with that particular add-on. In case you were losing any sleep over it.

Recolor of a drawing I did about a year ago (which I guess I never bothered to post here). I've been pretty busy today, haven't I? Not venturing far from the drawing table at all. While that kind of concentration is rewarding, it leaves me a mite burned out at the end of the process. I wonder how all those old-time animators could paint cels for eight hours at a stretch without utterly losing their minds. Or their eyesight!

Couple versions of a drawing done this afternoon...the original black-and-white ink drawing, and a color version. The title is just a random afterthought, as I wasn't trying to capture the guy's likeness (apart from the hair). It just presented itself, if you will. I'm in a very draw-y mood this evening: I made a long-overdue purchase of a lightweight, portable drafting table today, and it's a total godsend. Makes the process so much easier than hunching over a flat surface. Tools used include a Simply Simmons round no. 8 brush, Higgins Black Magic ink, an HP 2175 All-in-One scanner (that needs to be replaced), and Photoshop CS.

Batpuzzle & Phantom Stranger

It's a Friday morning, and while I do have some ideas for upcoming drawings forming in my mind, I'm going to save them for later. You'll see 'em, I promise. I will, however, post this super-cool scan of a Japanese puzzle featuring Batman and Robin vs. some kinda giant Rodan-style monster, a relic of the Dynamic Duo's fleeting popularity in 1960s Japan. Notice Batman's brown leather gloves and red shorts, Robin's raygun and blue gingham shirt worn under his red vest, and that the Science Patrol-looking guys are the only ones actually doing anything to combat the monster. Theirs is the superior weaponry!

It was found on the Comics Journal forums (credit where credit is due).

I'm resigned to the fact that I can't sit still long enough to read a work of prose fiction any more (I'm not proud, but there you have it). But I can read 500-page comic books if they're told in quick, to-the-point 10-page stories with crisp artwork, slightly offbeat concepts, and spooky settings. Which is why I've been enjoying the first volume of The Phantom Stranger, published by DC Comics as part of their black-and-white newsprint Showcase series. It's a similar conceit to what Marvel do with their Essentials line: both reprint big chunks of certain characters' backstories, produced in a cheap but easily-readable format (and, frankly, I prefer to read old comics on rough newsprint, though the addition of minimal color would be nice).

I'm approaching it with little or no prior knowledge, apart from that artists Neil Adams and Jim Aparo had involvement with the book. The character occupies an odd corner of the DC Universe populated by ghosts, walking voodoo dolls, and eerie 1970s horror kids with unnatural powers. Very of its time. At this early stage in my reading, the Phantom Stranger himself seems to be a shadowy figure who drifts in and out of each story, solving mysteries with vaguely-defined supernatural abilities. For now, I'm simply enjoying the book's grubby late-1960s/early-1970s vibe...all turtlenecks, flared trousers, and haunted muscle cars.

The drawing of the day, just a little comic-book moment captured in time. My original conception of the piece was far different...strictly black and white, with more activity going on behind the two figures. Instead, it got kinda murky and indistinct, but hopefully kept on the right side of readability. There's something inherently 1980s about my drawing, and I can't quite shake it. I looked at too many Marshall Rogers drawings as a kid, maybe.

Update: On further review I'm noticing a few things that should be changed. More than a few, actually, though there are still aspects of this that I dig. I think a redraw is in order...I'll post the revised version here, once it's completed. You have to keep tinkering with robots to make them work, y'know.

I'm still not over my "I can't draw" doldrums, but am trying to shake 'em off. I drew with pen this time, rather than brush or brush pen, hoping to focus on line rather than modeling or rendering. Too much shadow can amount to just cheating or faking, y'know. My command of anatomy is still a bit wonky, but that's what happens when I draw from imagination (rather than from life). As an aside, I listened to an interview with Mike Mignola last night, which was both interesting and inspiring. I'm paraphrasing, here, but he said that he developed his style by producing hundreds of drawings he couldn't stand to look at, and picking out the one thing about each that he felt succeeded. Good approach.

Well, it seems that I do have a little bit of time to draw...grabbed in between chugs of coffee and other pressing tasks, each vying for my attention. And it's all for you, the reader!

This is a bit of a throwback to the days when I'd bash out page after page of cartoony faces with little regard for anatomy, accuracy or carefully-placed lines. The 1980s and '90s, in other words. The biblical-looking fellow in the bottom row began life as a woman but underwent gender reassignment treatment 'cause his nose and jawline were too masculine-looking. Could be an Easter Island figure to his right. I didn't bother cleaning up this scan at all, so you can see the various blueline pencil marks and admire the differing saturations of ink.

Batman & Robin: The Mummy Crime Fighters!

I'm a sucker for those ridiculous 1950s Batman stories that feature mysterious rays, bizarre transformations, flying saucers, giant lizards...and strange changes of costume for Batman and Robin (the Boy Wonder). I was lucky enough to snag this issue of Detective Comics at Wondercon here in SF, and felt that its deserved a little artistic tribute. Haven't yet read the story, though: will it live up to its promise? I should mention that the original cover was drawn by Sheldon Moldoff, one of Bob Kane's many ghosts.

I'm not crazy about all of Godard's output...but Alphaville and Week End are great, great stuff for the eye, ear and brain.
